Arctic Air Waiting On Deck…

Screen Shot 2015-02-11 at 8.00.54 AMArctic Air And Snow Chances…Today will be the best day of the upcoming seven days, but caution as an arctic front slams into the region late tonight and early Thursday with bitter cold, strong and gusty winds, and scattered snow showers.  Tomorrow will feel nasty with sub-zero wind chills continuing through the day.

Friday will feature dry and cold conditions and we’ll eye Friday night/ early Saturday for the second, and more intense, arctic surge.  Temperatures will fall through the day, winds will be strong, and snow showers will be around the region.  We also note some localized lake effect is possible with both arctic surges and targets northeast and east-central portions of the state for potential lake effect enhancement.  Saturday wind chill values will be 20 to 25 degrees below zero.

Sunday will be dry and cold, but by this time all eyes will be on a winter storm developing to our southwest.  Forecast models vary between a moderate to a significant winter storm and this will require a close eye and fine tuning in the days ahead.

Winter’s Back!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 8.09.10 AMLots Of Winter Ahead…After a brief weekend thaw, winter’s set to roar back with authority this week.  Morning freezing drizzle and freezing fog should diminish and give way to a mostly cloudy day.  It’ll be much colder than what we enjoyed over the weekend as temperatures hold nearly steady through the day.

Sunshine returns briefly Tuesday, but another fast-moving weather disturbance will bring a light rain shower Wednesday.  As a shot of arctic air drills in here Wednesday night and Thursday, snow showers will blow into town with gusty winds.

A second and even more intense surge of bitter arctic air will pour south Saturday into Sunday.  Dangerously cold air will be accompanied with this surge, including below zero wind chills and more snow showers.

We’re eyeing early next week for the opportunity of a more widespread winter event.  Stay tuned…

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: Less than 0.10″
  • 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: 1″ – 2″

Enjoy Today; Cold Week Coming…

Another mild day is on tap with a southwest flow ahead of a frontal boundary that slips through this evening with light showers. Note the sharp temperature gradient this evening.…

Nice Saturday, But Winter’s Far From Finished…

Screen Shot 2015-02-07 at 9.26.28 AMSpring Fever This Weekend…Lots of sunshine and enough of a southwesterly air flow will help boost temperatures to around the 50 degree mark this afternoon from IND and points south (even some mid to upper 50s possible far down state).  Farther north, the deeper snowpack will limit warming and instead keep highs in the upper 30s to near 40 across the northern third of the state.

A cold front will blow through the region Sunday evening with some light shower activity and colder air moving in Sunday night that may lead to a few flurries/ light snow showers Monday morning.  Another fast-moving weather disturbance will blow through Wednesday with a light shower and then we’ll welcome winter back into the region with authority.  Much colder air and snow showers return for the end of the week.

Looking ahead, mid and late February appears to have plenty of wintry “fun and games” in store for the region.  Winter’s far from finished….

Moderating Weekend Temperatures…

Screen Shot 2015-02-06 at 7.33.19 AMSpring Fever Anyone?! Hearing lots of rumbles of folks craving spring, as is usually the case around these parts come early February.  We still have more winter to go, but this weekend may lead to a surge in spring fever as temperatures moderate.  We may have to deal with more clouds than we’d like, but temperatures will warm to well above normal levels- especially Sunday.  We’ll introduce a couple of showers into the mix for the second half of the weekend, but these won’t be a big deal.

Slightly colder air moves in early next week, but it’s really not until after a weak disturbance passes Wednesday that the true arctic plunge will take place.

Decent Day Today; Snowy Wednesday Afternoon Ahead

Screen Shot 2015-02-03 at 8.02.05 AMNot A Bad Day Today; Snow Event Wednesday…After a cold start today, temperatures will moderate into the lower to middle 30s this afternoon.  We’ll be in a weak southerly air flow this afternoon as a disturbance tracks to our north.

The big focus of this forecast package has to do with Wednesday. We forecast a quiet start to the day, but clouds will quickly lower and thicken and widespread snow, briefly heavy, will overspread all of the region tomorrow afternoon.  This will be a dry, powdery snow as all of the snow will fall behind an arctic boundary that will slip through the region.  As of now we forecast 2″-3″ of snow tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening.  Strong and gusty north winds will lead to blowing and drifting issues Wednesday evening.  All in all, expect the Wednesday evening rush to be impacted.  Frigid air will settle over the region by Thursday morning with dry conditions returning.

Temperatures will slowly moderate briefly out ahead of our next weekend weather maker.  Keep an eye on Sunday-Monday as that will be our next opportunity for accumulating wintry precipitation.

Cold Start To The Work Week; Watching Wednesday…

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 7.46.45 AMBundle Up…Snow showers and gusty winds are combining with refreezing of snow and moisture on roadways to create slick travel this Monday morning.  Leave extra time on your way to work and school this morning and travel safely.  Additionally, gusty northwest winds are pushing wind chill values into the subzero ranks.  As we progress through the day we should see increasing sunshine, but it’ll remain frigid.

Our next storm system of interest arrives by the middle of the week.  Forecast models differ on the timing and amount of moisture with this next storm, but there’s the chance of accumulating snow arriving Wednesday.  This would be in advance of a quick-hitting pop of arctic air.  We’ll keep a close eye on things.

The active pattern remains into the upcoming weekend as increasing clouds give way to showers Saturday and a transition to more a of wintry mix Sunday.

Weekend Snow Storm…

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 7.10.35 AMWeekend Snow Storm On Deck…Scattered snow flurries and snow showers will come to an end this morning with increasing sunshine following.  Despite seeing a little vitamin D this afternoon, it won’t do anything to help us in the temperature department.  In fact, we already experienced our high around midnight.  Temperatures this afternoon will remain in the middle to upper 20s with a gusty wind.

Most of Saturday will be quiet (calm before the storm) with dry conditions and afternoon highs around 40.  Clouds will lower and thicken as we go through the afternoon and evening and snow will develop (rain or a wintry mix down state initially) across central Indiana during the overnight.  Snow will increase in intensity Sunday morning and grow heavy at times during the day as low pressure tracks along the Ohio River (a classic track for central Indiana snow storms).  See our initial accumulation map below, which is still subject to change.  We’ll introduce a gusty east and northeast wind into the mix Sunday evening and night and this will lead to blowing and drifting snow Sunday night.  Stay tuned.

The big story next week will be the cold, but we’re also watching two potential snow makers, as well.  More on that after we deal with Sunday’s snow storm.

Now This Is More Like It…

Screen Shot 2015-01-28 at 7.30.19 AMMaking Up For Lost Time…Many snow lovers out there have been disappointed by the lack of the white stuff winter to date.  The cool thing is that the next 7-10 days (most likely longer) will offer up multiple opportunities to serve up accumulating snow.

First things first and that’s today- look for bright sunshine and a frosty start.  Temperatures will “warm” to just under seasonal levels this afternoon.  A fast moving storm system will scoot through here late tonight and Thursday morning with light rain, possibly transitioning to light snow showers before precipitation ends Tuesday (not a big deal).  Far eastern areas may experience a brief period of light freezing rain or light sleet during the onset of precipitation, but things should switch over to light rain rather rapidly even for you.  We’ll turn dry and cold to wrap up the work week.

All eyes are on the weekend as a storm system moves towards the region.  We have a ways to go and we’ll have to fine tune the details over the next few days, but this has potential to be the most widespread significant wintry event of the season.  Stay tuned.  MUCH colder air will punch in here early next week and may set the stage for more wintry “mischief” by the middle of next week.

ISRlogo2-280x121IU at Purdue: 9p tonight

Good news is that for those driving to West Lafayette tonight, you should be dealing with dry conditions.  Precipitation chances will begin to go up as we near 11p, or after, for western portions of the state.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 0.25″
  • 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: 3″ – 6″
