Overall Mild Pattern Not Without Challenges…

I. Areas of light snow and freezing drizzle will continue into the overnight hours and on into Wednesday morning. Watch for slick spots overnight-Wednesday morning.

II. Clouds will finally begin to erode Wednesday night and set us up for plentiful sunshine Thursday.  Along with the increasing sunshine, a southwesterly air flow will develop and assist with providing a new “warming” trend as we close the work week.  Mid-40s are ahead Thursday and lower-50s Friday.  A “big hair warning” is officially in effect Friday as winds gust between 30-40 MPH Friday. 🙂

III. Our next storm system arrives on the scene overnight Friday into Saturday with light rain.

IV. We’re also monitoring the possibility of a “sneaky” snow maker Sunday night into Monday in a fast northwest flow.  Light snow will impact portions of the Ohio Valley, but we’ll have to fine tune things over the next few days with respect to specific track and placement of the swath of accumulating snow.  Stay tuned!

Monday Evening Rambles: Rain Showers Change To Snow Showers Tuesday Morning…

I. Another round of showers will pivot through central Indiana later this evening ahead of a cold front.  Once the cold front sweeps through the state, temperatures will fall during the overnight and grow cold enough to allow precipitation to transition to wet snow showers Tuesday as upper level energy rotates through the Ohio Valley.

II.  High pressure will settle overhead through midweek and while we’ll “chill” to near seasonal levels Wednesday, the rebound will begin Thursday and we’ll climb into the 50s for highs Friday, complete with an increasingly gusty southwest breeze.

III.  Our next storm system will approach late Friday night into Saturday with rain and gusty winds.  Models differ on rainfall amounts and we’ll split the difference for now (in general we forecast between 0.25″ to 0.50″, but we’ll keep a close eye on data over the next few days).

IV. We’ll turn cooler for the second half of the weekend, but the overall pattern is a transient one into next week and overall milder than average.  That said, things will begin to change in big time fashion as we rumble into February.  Winter is a long ways from being over…

Wet To White (At Times) Through Early Week…

A quick note before we dive into the upcoming forecast pattern.  Instead of issuing 7-day posts within the blog format, the most updated IndyWx.com 7-day forecast will now be featured at the top left of the site.  We’re continuously trying to provide you the information and content you need in a quick and concise manner- eliminating having to “scroll and search” (unless you’re bored, of course ;-))!

Areas of fog and drizzle will continue this evening before a stronger southwesterly air flow pushes the low clouds and fog north during the overnight.  As a cold front draws closer, steadier rains and perhaps even a clap of thunder (especially down state) will arrive Monday morning.  Temperatures will remain nearly steady or even rise overnight into the lower 50s.

The frontal passage, itself, will take place Monday evening and may feature a couple of gusty showers, especially across western and central portions of the state.

Temperatures will grow colder Monday night into Tuesday morning and precipitation will end as snow showers Tuesday.

High pressure will build in through midweek and provide dry conditions with increasing sunshine.  The midweek stretch will begin seasonable before warming ahead of our next storm system.

That next storm system will deliver rain as early as Friday evening into Saturday.  We’ll note an increasingly gusty southwesterly breeze as we wrap up the work week, along with increasing cloudiness.

Milder, But Active…

Highlights:

  • Gloomy close to the weekend
  • Rain-to-snow early week
  • Significant storm next weekend

Drizzle And Fog Develops…Our Saturday opened with plentiful sunshine and milder conditions.  Unfortunately, the low cloud deck invaded through the afternoon hours and will take up residence through Sunday.  Fog and drizzle will develop tonight and continue through most of Sunday.

Steadier rains will arrive on the scene late Sunday night into Monday morning ahead of an approaching cold front.  That cold front will sweep through the state Monday afternoon with additional showers and a dramatic wind shift.  Colder air will then press into the region and as wrap around moisture swings through the state, snow showers will develop Tuesday.

As mentioned in previous posts, we’re in a transient and very active regime.  Just as soon as the colder air arrives for midweek, we’ll shift our air flow around to the southwest and usher in milder times to close the week.  A significant storm system is brewing next weekend.  We’ll forecast increasing cloudiness Saturday with rain arriving by afternoon.  We’ll have to keep tabs on next Sunday for the possibility of wintry conditions returning…

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • Snowfall: Dusting
  • Rainfall: 0.50″ to 1.00″

January Thaw Takes Hold…

January is running more than 11.5° below average and more than 50% of the country is currently covered in snow.

However, big changes begin to take place this weekend and will remain intact for the majority of the next couple weeks.  The mean trough position will back into the west while ridging takes hold across the east.  This will feature temperatures that will push to above average values and lead to an active and moist southwesterly flow.

Over the upcoming (10) days, temperatures may reach 50°, or greater, on 3 to 4 of those days.  Compared to how frigid we’ve been (already had 7 mornings this month with sub-zero lows), this will feel like a heat wave.

We’ll leave you with a heads up to enjoy the January thaw (yes, even if you’re one of those winter lovers out there) as the pattern sure looks like it’ll deliver a return to bitterly cold, wintry times as we head into February…  In fact, analogs would suggest once winter returns, it’s likely to remain in place deep into spring this year.

“Less Harsh;” Weekend Rain…

Highlights:

  • Turning “less cold”
  • Weekend rain
  • Chilly early next week

Sunny And Not As Cold…The arctic high that delivered the bitterly cold conditions over the past few days is scooting off to the southeast.  This will put the state under a milder (all relative :-)) southwesterly flow and temperatures will become “less harsh” as we wrap up the work week!

An approaching storm system will lead to increasing clouds during the afternoon and evening Saturday and drizzle will follow Sunday morning.  As the cold front draws closer, steadier rains will arrive Sunday night into Monday.  Colder times will sweep in behind the front and allow left over precipitation to end as snow showers Monday (not a big deal).

Tuesday and Wednesday will feature dry and chilly conditions.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • Snowfall:  Dusting
  • Rainfall:  0.25″ to 0.75″
