Weekly #AGwx And #Severe Weather Outlook…

I. Warmer and more humid air builds northeast through the period.

II. Rain and storms return.

While excessive heat isn’t expected, a much warmer and more humid pattern will emerge (compared to late) through the forecast period.
Above average rainfall is expected from the upper Midwest into the Ohio Valley.
Clusters of storms should lead to between 1” and 2” of rain for central Indiana by next Saturday morning. There will be locally heavier amounts.
Storm complexes will have embedded strong to severe thunderstorms this week. Biggest concern will be the potential of damaging straight line winds.

Forecast Period: 08.08.20 through 08.15.20

While we still have one more day of relatively low humidity, that will begin to change for the second half of the weekend. Temperatures will climb to seasonal and above normal levels this week as well. In short, after an unusually refreshing open to August, true late-summer conditions will build back into the region. Rain and storm chances will also increase substantially throughout the week. Some storm complexes will include heavy rain and embedded stronger storms. From this distance it’s hard to pinpoint what day will have the best chance of storms, but agriculture, turf management, and anyone with outdoor plans should prepare for multiple days with weather impacts through the upcoming week. Given the nature of this setup, some communities will likely deal with excessive rain totals by this time next week (unfortunately the pattern still looks wet beyond the period), with widespread 1” to 2” totals across the board.

Weekly #AGwx And #Severe Weather Outlook…

I. Isaias set to impact the eastern seaboard early week.

II. Unseasonably cool air dominates the period from the Plains into the Ohio Valley.

Well below normal temperatures can be expected for the upcoming week from the Plains into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.
Above normal rainfall is expected from the Ohio Valley and into the eastern Great Lakes and along the East Coast.
We forecast between 1″ and 2″ of rain for central Indiana- most of which will fall now through Tuesday.

Severe: Widespread severe weather isn’t anticipated this week, with the exception of just east of the track of our surface low today (eastern KY, southeast OH, and northern VA) and into the Northeast Sunday.

Forecast Period: 08.01.20 through 08.07.20

Our weather will be dominated by a trough and associated low pressure through the early portion of the work week. Initially it’s a surface low that will provide periods of rain and embedded thunder through the weekend, but by the time we get to Monday and Tuesday, it’s upper level energy that will be responsible for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Periods of heavy rain can be expected this afternoon into tonight, especially across east-central Indiana. Thereafter, drier air will arrive for midweek. With the drier airmass in place, temperatures will fall into the mid-upper 50s (average low is in the middle 60s). Our next weather feature (a weak cold front) will arrive next Friday with the potential of scattered showers and storms.

Isaias will skirt the eastern seaboard through the early portions of the week. While not a particularly well organized storm, tropical storm and low end cat. 1 hurricane force winds can be expected from eastern portions of the Florida peninsula and up the Carolina coast, into New England by midweek.

Weekly #AGwx And #Severe Weather Outlook…

I. Tracking (2) cold fronts this week

II. Tropics remain a topic for the foreseeable future.

Well below normal temperatures will descend into the central while the coasts maintain the heat.
Wetter than normal conditions are expected from the central Plains into the Southeast and western Gulf.
We forecast around 1″ of rain for immediate central Indiana through the forecast period (with locally heavier totals).
A few strong to severe storms are possible Monday PM as a cold front moves through the region.

Forecast Period: 07.25.20 through 08.01.20

High pressure will remain in control of our short-term weather resulting in dry conditions prevailing for most through the weekend. As we move into the new work week, the 1st of (2) cold fronts will sweep through the state. Accordingly, rain chances will increase Monday, including the potential of a couple strong storms ahead of the cold front. The front will move through the region relatively quickly and we forecast dry (and cooler) conditions to return by Tuesday. The pattern gets much “murkier” by the middle to latter portions of the week as guidance continues to waffle on handling a second feature in what’ll be an anomalous pattern by late July-early August standards. While data struggles on handling the specifics, we’ll remain consistent with a more unsettled time of things by Thursday into Friday (and potentially next weekend based on how things play out). Stay tuned.

One additional note, the quick start to the tropical season is not without good reason. Unfortunately, all indications continue to point towards a hyperactive season (byproduct of favorable MJO and SST configuration). Next up will likely be a threat to the SE US coast (too early to say between the Gulf or Atl) just after Day 10.

Another Round Of Storms Inbound Tonight (Some Strong); Tropics Heat Up; Active Pattern To Close July-Open August…

I. A round of strong (and locally severe) storms blew through north-central parts of the state earlier this afternoon and as we write this, yet another batch of storms is erupting across IL. These storms should hold together into central IN late evening (targeting a 8p-11p arrival west to east) and a few could become severe. Ingredients in place favor strong, damaging wind gusts with the stronger cells, but there’s also the opportunity for a quick spin-up tornado. Torrential downpours can be expected with any and all storms. It’ll be wise to keep tabs on the local radar this evening.

II. As can be expected the deeper into summer we go, the tropics become more active. That’s certainly been the case over the past couple days and all indications continue to point towards a particularly “robust” season as late summer gives way to fall. Interests to the Gulf Coast beaches and Carolina coast should pay close attention to the tropical outlooks in the coming weeks and months. Unfortunately, conditions seem ripe for the opportunity of a few major hurricanes this season, especially when you combine the SST profile with the tendency for the MJO to spend time in Phases 2-3.

In the shorter term, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is keeping close tabs on the Gulf as well as newly formed TD 7.

III. Overall upper pattern strongly suggests we can expect a very active close to July and open to August. Between next week and the first few days of August, we’re tracking 3 cold fronts that will help to beat back the heat and serve up above normal rainfall through the period (not to mention threat of additional strong to severe storms).
