*Your complete and updated 7-day will be posted later tonight. As always, please click on the images below to enlarge.
1.) Early freezing rain will give way to a moderate to heavy rain event Saturday. Widespread 1″-2″ rainfall amounts can be expected. If traveling during the predawn hours across central Indiana, be aware for possible light glazing from freezing rain. Forecast radar shows freezing rain potential shortly after midnight. This should transition to all rain between 2a-4a across central Indiana, but if your travels take you north, northern parts of the state will hang on to a wintry mix a few hours longer.
2.) We’re eyeing an accumulating snow event as a clipper system and associated arctic front blow in Monday night and Tuesday. Still early to talk specific snow amounts, but it’s the type event that could deposit a “few” inches. More in the days ahead. Wind and brutal cold will accompany this snow.
3.) Dangerous cold invades next week and reaches coldest levels Wednesday into Thursday. Wind chill values may approach 30 degrees below zero. Definitely a dangerous scenario if you plan to be outdoors for any length of time period.
4.) Additional wintry mischief awaits later next week…

Highlights:
- Freezing For For Some This Morning
- Sunny And Very Cold Weather To Close 2014
- Weekend Wintry Event
Patchy Freezing Fog; Sunny And Cold…Patchy freezing fog has created slick spots on some roadways this morning, particularly just north of the city. This should burn off relatively quickly this morning and give way to partly cloudy skies this afternoon. A frosty start will “warm” into the middle 30s later this afternoon.
Stretch Of Dry, But Very Cold Weather…A sprawling arctic high will impact our weather to wrap up 2014 and welcome in 2015. The result will be an extended stretch of sunny days, but bitterly cold air. For all of those hosting New Year’s Eve parties this year, we might suggest having extra wood for that cozy fire!
Late Week Storm System…We’ll introduce a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain into your forecast as early as Friday afternoon. While there are still some issues concerning track and timing, we’ll continue the chance of a wintry mix through the weekend. Stay tuned.
Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:
- 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 0.10″ – 0.20″
- 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: 1″ – 2″

A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain continues to advance slowly northeast this morning. Thankfully, most of the rush hour should be over by the time any of this wintry precipitation arrives and we have a couple things going for us this morning: 1.) Drier air is giving this precipitation a tough time advancing northeast and 2.) by the time the precipitation arrives, temperatures will be marginal for many road problems, if any. By far the more concerning issues are off to the southwest of Indianapolis, including places like Terre Haute (where moderate snow was reported at 9am).
The HRRR slowly pushes the wintry mix along the I-70 corridor this morning.
Attention then turns to a heavy rain event Friday into Saturday morning. Widespread 1-2″ amounts are expected.
Forecast radar shows periods of heavy rain overnight Friday into Saturday morning.
Much more this evening!

We think we’re dealing with another round of light freezing drizzle and a wintry mix for the Thursday morning commute. Plan to allow extra travel time.
Forecast radar Thursday morning suggests freezing drizzle and a light wintry mix is in play across central Indiana.
There’s some longer term data that’s in stark contrast from what a positive PNA should produce (yet alone a strong positive PNA). Typical positive PNA pattern should promote an eastern trough and associated colder than normal pattern as drawn below:
Needless to say, we disagree strongly with the NAEFS and GFS ensembles:
Regardless, the future will tell!

Watch For Slick Spots This Morning…A light wintry mix of freezing drizzle, snow, and sleet fell across central Indiana during the overnight. Most roads have been treated, but still leave extra time to reach your destination and travel safely. We think we’ll get rid of the low clouds, fog, and pesky light wintry precipitation during the afternoon and introduce at least a look or two of sun into your forecast! It’ll be a chilly day as highs struggle to reach 40.
Tricky Thursday…Another fast moving disturbance will deliver light precipitation to central Indiana as early as Thursday morning. With temperatures below freezing during the onset of precipitation, much of this may fall in the “frozen” or “freezing” form. We’re concerned about light freezing rain and light sleet arriving during the morning commute Thursday and we’ll fine tune timing and precipitation type with tonight’s update. Temperatures should slowly “warm” above freezing during the afternoon switching wintry precipitation over to just plain ole rain. Stay tuned.
Wet Open To The Weekend…This morning’s model data is in much better agreement in regards to our wet weather maker slated for the opening to the weekend. A slug of widespread moderate to heavy rain will push in here Friday and continue into early Saturday. We think the back half of Saturday will feature drier air moving into the region which will set up a dry, but cold Sunday.
Cold Push Early Next Week…We’re siding with the colder solution early next week for now. We forecast a cold front to blow through the area Monday afternoon with a quick shower possible (not a big deal). Tuesday will feature colder northwest breezes and a scattered snow shower, or two.
Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:
- 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 1.00″ – 1.50″
- 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: Dusting to less than 1″

Our high resolution models continue to be rather aggressive on the idea of a wintry mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain falling across central Indiana Tuesday morning. The HRRR…

Very Cold Close To The Work Week…We’ve been cold for so long, it’s hard to remember that our average high this time of year is still around the 50 degree mark. We won’t come anywhere close to that before Saturday. Sunshine will dominate both today and Friday before giving way to increasingly cloudy skies late Friday.
Freezing Rain Potential; Wind And Storms Sunday…Light freezing rain is likely late Friday night into the wee morning hours Saturday. Thankfully before we see widespread icing problems, temperatures should “warm” above freezing with a cloudy, breezy, and showery day on tap.
Heavier rain and embedded thunderstorms will rumble through the region Sunday, along with gusty south winds as a strong storm system lifts into the Great Lakes region. Locally heavy rain can be expected with this event Sunday.
Colder For Thanksgiving Week; Eyeing Late Week Storm Potential…While we’ll enjoy one day above normal (Sunday) the overall weather pattern is one that’ll continue to result in a colder than normal regime over our part of the country. A cold Thanksgiving week is shaping up with well below average temperatures. Some scattered snow showers/ flurries are possible midweek, but it’s as we go into late next week/ weekend when a storm of “more importance” emerges. Far too early for specifics on rain or snow, but stay tuned…
