Pre Super Bowl Rambles: Stormy Pattern Shifts To A Return Of Significant Cold?
In the short-term, there’s no getting around the very active pattern in place. As we’ve been discussing, we’ll find ourselves “smack dab” in the middle of a battle ground between a stubborn southeast ridge and building cold to our northwest. The fight in between will yield well above normal precipitation over the next couple of weeks.
Over the upcoming (10) days, expect a roller coaster ride in the temperature department as the battle takes place. While the most anomalous warmth is taking place now (IND is on pace to set a new record high temperature before the end of the day), relative warmth will continue to dominate into midweek before colder air presses and wins out.
After Monday’s light rain, we’re targeting (3) opportunities for significant precipitation across the region:
I. Tuesday night-Wednesday (still may include a risk of freezing rain across north-central communities).
II. Wednesday night-Thursday morning
III. Thursday night-Friday morning (ending as light snow)
When all is said and done, model data is in agreement on significant rainfall totals across central Indiana (2″ to 3″ amounts will be common by Friday).
Thereafter, confidence is high on colder air returning as we close the week and head into next weekend.
Guidance suggests that we still need to remain abreast of the potential of a more widespread wintry event late next weekend and this is something we’ll continue to keep close tabs on as we progress through the upcoming week. As of now, this doesn’t appear to be a major event, but stay tuned.
As we look ahead, we’ll have to continue keeping a close eye on the MJO. Today’s update shows the majority of data swinging things into Phase 8 by mid to late month. Should that come to fruition, prospects of another significant cold spell loom large…

Tracking Two Cold Fronts; Dangerous Cold Arrives Tuesday Evening…
We’re tracking two cold fronts as we open the new work week. The first will pass without a whole lot of fanfare this evening. However, the second boundary (the true arctic front) means business Tuesday afternoon/ evening.
We notice a band of mixed precipitation moving into central IN before sunrise. This will swing through the state, changing to rain as it does so, through the morning and into the early afternoon. The reason? Just enough mild air working in on southwesterly breezes ahead of the frontal boundary.
The front will pass through the city around or just after rush hour. Gusty winds and falling temperatures are ahead this evening.
By morning, most of central Indiana will awake to temperatures in the single digits.
The second front (true arctic boundary) will be barreling towards the state at this time and will pass Tuesday evening. It’ll hit like a “wall” with gusty winds, brief, but intense snow squalls, and plummeting temperatures.
Central Indiana will be greeted with temperatures nearing 10° below zero and wind chill values of 30° to 40° below zero Wednesday morning.
Please take this cold seriously and complete preparations today. Thankfully, milder times are ahead as we head into the weekend…

Records? We’ve Got Records, And Looking Ahead…
Meteorological spring began March 1st (though you wouldn’t know it with all of the cold and snow lately). Snow dominated the headlines in March with nearly a foot that fell. Cold also was a story as temperatures ran significantly below normal. Check out these impressive stats, courtesy of the Indianapolis National Weather Service:
- The 10.2″ of snow that fell at Indianapolis on the 24th set the daily snowfall record and 2nd snowiest March day ever.
- The 11.6″ of snow at Indianapolis resulted in March 2018 going down as the 6th snowiest March on record.
- Temperatures ran 3.3° below average.
Though we’re only a few days into the month of April, the fourth month of the year is already trying to “out do” March. Sleep has been few and far between here in the good ole forecast office with such an active start to the month. From the heaviest Easter snow on record to setting the wettest day in April ever and widespread flooding, we’ve had it all in just the first (3) days!
- Indianapolis recorded 3.9″ of rain on the 3rd- good for the daily rainfall record and greatest amount of rain within any April day on record.
- Easter snow: though some places received more (3.2″ at Whitestown and up to 6″ of snow at Lafayette and Frankfort), Indianapolis accumulated 2.1″ which set a record for snowiest Easter and snowiest April 1st.
At one time what looked like another snow-starved snow season is now getting oh so much closer to “average,” with the late season rally. As the saying goes, “it’s never over until it’s over!” In Whitestown, we’re now over 30″ on the season! Indianapolis is up to 22.7″ on the season and only 3″ below average.
Looking ahead, the upcoming couple weeks should continue to promote an active pattern. Temperatures should follow the colder than normal theme and precipitation should run above average. For the snow, we’re not done with that yet, either! Speaking of snow, we’re tracking additional opportunities for snowfall this weekend and again early next week… Hang in there, spring will get here eventually…
