Snowy Thursday Night-Early Friday Morning On Tap…

Brief: Accumulating Snow

Forecaster: McMillan

What: Accumulating snow

When: This evening into the predawn hours Friday

Temperatures: 15 to 18 F

Wind: ESE 5-15 MPH

Blowing/ drifting: Minimal

Attention will shift from the dangerous cold to an accumulating snow event across central and north-central Indiana this evening into the predawn hours Friday. We expect snow to begin reaching the surface (may take a little longer than models suggest due to the dry air in place initially) in western portions of the viewing area between 6p-7p and into central Indiana between 8p and 9p. Heaviest snow still looks to fall during the hours of 10p and 3a. Banding may result in periods of moderate to heavy snow during this time frame. Light snow will be ongoing across southeast Indiana around 7a Friday before departing the state shortly thereafter.

Confidence: High

Next Update: 6:30p Thursday

Snowy Thursday Evening-Friday Morning…

Brief: Accumulating Snow

Forecaster: McMillan

What: Accumulating snow

When: Thursday evening into the predawn hours Friday

Temperatures: 15 to 20 F

Wind: ESE 5-15 MPH

Blowing/ drifting: Minimal

Dangerous cold is the story now, but we still expect an accumulating snow to pile up to the tune of a few to several inches across n-central and parts of central Indiana Thursday evening into the predawn hours Friday. Heaviest snow should fall during a period between 8p and 1a. Snowfall intensity will likely reach 1″/ hr at times as banding develops. We expect all accumulating snow to be over before sunrise Friday morning.

Confidence: Medium to high

Accumulating Snow Thursday Evening…

Brief: Accumulating Snow

Forecaster: McMillan

What: Accumulating snow

When: Thursday evening into the predawn hours Friday

Temperatures: Mid-upper 10s

Wind: SE 5-15 MPH

Blowing/ drifting: Minimal

Cold will grab the headlines over the next couple of days, including dangerous wind chill values, but attention will then shift to the potential of a “thump” of snow Thursday evening into early Friday.  A disturbance will dive southeast into the state during this time frame and early indications would suggest the “sweet spot” for snowfall accumulations will encompass the heart of central and north-central Indiana (early idea would place a 2” to 4” swath of snow in this area).

Confidence: Medium to high

Next Update: 6:30a Wednesday

Tracking Two Cold Fronts; Dangerous Cold Arrives Tuesday Evening…

We’re tracking two cold fronts as we open the new work week. The first will pass without a whole lot of fanfare this evening. However, the second boundary (the true arctic front) means business Tuesday afternoon/ evening.

We notice a band of mixed precipitation moving into central IN before sunrise. This will swing through the state, changing to rain as it does so, through the morning and into the early afternoon. The reason? Just enough mild air working in on southwesterly breezes ahead of the frontal boundary.

The front will pass through the city around or just after rush hour. Gusty winds and falling temperatures are ahead this evening.

By morning, most of central Indiana will awake to temperatures in the single digits.

The second front (true arctic boundary) will be barreling towards the state at this time and will pass Tuesday evening. It’ll hit like a “wall” with gusty winds, brief, but intense snow squalls, and plummeting temperatures.

Central Indiana will be greeted with temperatures nearing 10° below zero and wind chill values of 30° to 40° below zero Wednesday morning.

Please take this cold seriously and complete preparations today. Thankfully, milder times are ahead as we head into the weekend…

Accumulating Snow Arrives Later Today; Dangerously Cold Conditions Next Week…

Light snow and flurries are on the radar this morning, but steadier snow will overspread central IN this afternoon and evening. In general, this will be a 1″ to 2″ event for most, but there could be a few 2″+ reports by the time things wind down around midnight. Southern IN can expect a dusting to perhaps 1″ in spots.

Accumulating Snow Impacts Central Indiana Saturday…

Light snow is flying across central Indiana this evening, but “light” is the key word here. For most, a dusting is all we’ll muster with this initial wave of energy.

As we move into the first half of the weekend, a more vigorous disturbance will track across the region. We’ll notice snow breaking out across southwest Indiana around lunchtime before the area of snow grows in overall coverage and intensity through the afternoon into the evening hours.

With a cold surface and temperatures in the mid to upper 20s as the snow falls, expect slick roadways across the region Saturday afternoon into the evening. While winds aren’t expected to be particularly strong, the “open country” may experience a few issues with blowing and drifting snow due to the dry, powdery nature.

Most of central Indiana, including Indianapolis, can anticipate 1″ to 2″ of snow with this event Saturday, but there will likely be a couple of 2″+ reports. Snow will diminish from southwest to northeast after midnight.

Attention will then shift to additional snow and severe cold early next week… More on that in the AM.
