Lake-Driven APRIL Snow Showers…

Hard to believe we were in the 70s just passed the midnight hour Monday morning.  Feels like temperatures are now in the teens with snow showers and embedded heavier squalls across central Indiana- some of which have resulted in periodic slick travel conditions.

Note the lake Michigan connection to the snow “streamers” with that famous northwest to southeast orientation in this morning’s visible satellite image.

This morning’s radar shows the snow showers riding along I-65.

Highs today will struggle to reach 40 in many locations with wind chills in the teens and 20s.  A hard freeze is on tap tonight as all go into the middle to upper 20s.

Slow moderation will begin Wednesday…

Old Man Winter Isn’t Finished

Come this afternoon it’ll be tough to believe we were in the 70s over the weekend!  A cold front is moving through central Indiana this morning and resulting in showers.  Rain will continue in an off-and-on fashion today, becoming a bit more organized yet again later this afternoon and evening.  This will be in response to a wave of low pressure developing to our east, along the pressing strong cold front.

A look at the forecast simulated radar at 7pm this evening:

1

MUCH colder air will pour into the region today, complete with gusty northwest winds.  In fact, we’ll be in the 40s just after the lunchtime hour and the free-fall will continue.  30s arrive this evening and rain will begin to transition to wet snow.  Not all will see accumulation tonight, but a slushy accumulation of around half an inch will be possible where heavier snow persists.

A look at the forecast simulated radar towards 11pm-12am:

23

Temperatures will crash into the 20s by Tuesday morning.  I saw many folks at Lowes buying flowers yesterday…hopefully those folks aren’t planning on planting until later…

4

Tuesday will feature clearing skies, albeit unseasonably cold conditions.  We’ll remain in the 30s most of Tuesday, struggling to make it much above 40 by afternoon, along with a chilly northwest wind in place.  Lows Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning will drop into the lower to middle 20s.

From 76 Today To Snow Monday Night…

Custom IndyWx.com Forecast Updated 04.12.14 @ 8:16a

Warm Spring Weekend. . .After a chilly start to your Saturday, temperatures will quickly warm on a developing southerly breeze and that powerful April sunshine.  We note that moisture will begin to increase through the afternoon and evening hours and this may help trigger a widely scattered shower.  That said, the majority of neighborhoods will remain dry and rain-free today.  Enjoy what will be a beautiful spring day!

Strong southwest winds will howl Sunday, but the majority of the day will be dry and include a partly to mostly cloudy sky.  A passing shower is possible during the day, but, similar to Saturday, most will remain rain-free.  Better rain and storm chances will arrive late Sunday night into Monday.

Cold Frontal Passage. . .A cold front will move through the region Monday.  Ahead of this boundary, widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms will rumble through the area late Sunday night into Monday.  Today’s model data has trended downward on rainfall numbers and our forecast will follow suit.  We forecast anywhere from one half to three quarters of an inch of rain with this system.

Colder Air Moving In. . .A much colder air mass will pour in on a gusty northwest breeze Monday evening and Tuesday.  Temperatures will run close to 20 degrees below normal Tuesday and a hard freeze is ahead for Wednesday morning.

Moderating Back To Seasonal Levels. . .Temperatures will quickly begin to moderate by mid to late week as we get back into a milder southwesterly air flow.  We’ll introduce shower chances back into your forecast next Friday as the next weather system draws closer to our region.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 0.75-1″
  • 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: 0.00″

The Weekend Is Here!

After a few clouds this morning, we’re looking at increasing sunshine as we progress through the day.  Simulated satellite shows this well.

2

Thankfully, this is a sign of things to come and a very nice (and warm) weekend is on tap!

High pressure will build in through the day, helping skies turn increasingly sunny.  A north breeze will keep temperatures cooler today than yesterday’s official downtown high of 74.

3

Most of Saturday will be dry and feature partly cloudy skies, but clouds will develop and a widely scattered shower will be possible during the afternoon and evening as moisture begins to increase.  Most will stay dry Saturday, however.

4

Sunday will be a windy and warm day, but with partly cloudy and dry conditions for the better part of the day.  Heavier rain and strong storms will develop to our west Sunday, but it’s really not until Sunday night into Monday when our immediate region will deal with this rainy and stormy weather.

  • Friday: Increasing sunshine; 65
  • Saturday: Partly cloudy; widely scattered PM shower; 43/ 71
  • Sunday: Partly cloudy and windy; developing nighttime rain/storms; 59/ 73

Custom IndyWx.com Forecast Updated 04.09.14 @ 6:26p

Making The Push For 70. . .Thursday should be our first 70 degree day of 2014.  While clouds will be on the increase through the afternoon, we should enjoy enough of a southwest breeze and sunshine early in the day to allow temperatures to reach the 70 degree mark for afternoon highs.

We do note a frontal boundary that will move through the region Thursday evening, and this will be capable of producing a round of quick-hitting showers and a possible rumble of thunder.  Rainfall amounts will be light.  We think drier air will allow for increasing amounts of sunshine as we go through your Friday.

Warm, Mostly Pleasant Weekend. . .Most of Saturday will be rain free, but we’ll introduce the threat of a scattered shower Saturday afternoon as moisture begins to return.  Similar to that of Thursday, we’ll make yet another push at the 70 degree mark before clouds and rain chances begin to put a lid on the temperature climb.

While Sunday will feature better rain chances, it won’t be a wash out by any stretch of the imagination.  We certainly don’t recommend canceling any outdoor activities this weekend; just keep the umbrella handy should you have to dodge a thundershower.

Better Rain; Storm Chances. . .Rain and thunderstorm chances will begin to ramp up as we go into Sunday night into Monday.  Modeling continues to struggle in terms of the precise details of our early week events, but we’re confident on a round of rain and potential gusty thunderstorms before a cooler surge of air invades Monday night and Tuesday.  Stay tuned as we’ll have a good deal of fine tuning to do for the Sunday night-Monday night forecast.

Custom IndyWx.com Forecast Updated 04.09.14 @ 8:31a

Sunshine Returns; Warming Up. . .Instability-driven thundershowers developed Tuesday afternoon across central Indiana and even produced small hail in a few locations, especially east of the city.  Thankfully though the sunshine we experienced Tuesday evening is a sign of things to come for the mid week stretch.  We forecast a mostly sunny to partly cloudy sky both today and Thursday, along with moderating temperatures.

A strong southwest breeze will help usher in potentially the first 70 degree day of the year Thursday.  We also note winds may gust upwards of 30 MPH (especially in the open country) Thursday afternoon.

Late Week Front. . .A cold front will move through the region during the day Friday.  Latest model data suggests a little more moisture will be available than we thought earlier this week and as a result we’ll hit the shower and potential thundershower chance a little harder Friday.  Anywhere from 0.25-0.50 of rain will be possible with this system as it moves through the area.

Watching The Weekend. . .While Friday’s front will only make it so far south, we’re still thinking Saturday will be rain-free for the majority of central Indiana.  We’ll note the threat of a shower down state and keep a close eye on things, but for now we’ll keep Saturday’s forecast dry and warm.  Get out there and enjoy a beautiful day!

Our next storm system will take aim on the region Sunday.  As such, clouds will increase and shower and thunderstorm chances will be on the rise as we go through the day.  We do note a rather large range in model forecast temperatures Sunday between the middle 70s per the European data to the lower 60s per the GFS.  For now, we’ll split the difference and forecast upper 60s Sunday with increasing rain chances as we progress through the day.  Stay tuned.

Brief, But Potent Blast Of Winter Chill. . .Another significant rain maker will blow through the region Sunday night into Monday.  At this early stage in the game, there’s a rather high probability of moderate to heavy rainfall (greater than 1″), but the bigger story will likely be the blast of winter-like chill that will invade next Monday night into Tuesday.  In fact, there may be just enough moisture lingering to result in some light snow or flurries Tuesday as the cold air pours in.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 1″ – 1.5″
  • 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: 0.00″
