Pick Of The Upcoming 7 Days…Though we’ll note a gusty southwesterly breeze by the afternoon hours, Friday will easily be the pick of the upcoming seven days with dry skies and slightly above average temperatures.  Enjoy much needed sunshine!

Chilly Air Blows In…A cold front will pass through the region early Saturday and be accompanied by a noted wind shift to the northwest and an increase in cloudiness.  While any one location stands a risk of seeing a quick-hitting light (key word) shower, most folks will remain dry.  Best chances of picking up a shower will be across northeastern portions of the state.

The big story over the weekend will be a renewed push of unseasonable chill (more like November).  Couple that with a gusty northwest wind Saturday and you’ll definitely want the jacket or sweatshirt handy.  Sunday will feature a frosty start followed by a cool, crisp afternoon complete with sunshine.

Reinforcing Chilly Air…Light rain will be possible Monday evening into early Tuesday as another push of cool air blows southeast.  Precipitation amounts will be very light and won’t amount to much.  Otherwise, the story as we move into the middle and latter portions of next week will be more dry weather and unseasonably cool conditions.

7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 0.10″ – 0.25″
  • 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: 0.00″

October or November?!

While we may see a bit of morning sunshine, clouds will quickly return and set up a downright raw and cold day. Along with the increasing cloudiness, we’ll also note…

Changes…BIG weather changes begin today as a warm front lifts through the region.  This will lead to a warm and windy afternoon with showers and a possible rumble of thunder arriving as early as the morning rush.  Periods of showers and thunderstorms will continue this afternoon and evening, but we also want to note there will be plenty of dry time in between rain drops.  A bigger push of showers and thunderstorms will blow into town tonight into the wee morning hours Friday.  A couple of these storms may reach severe levels, especially for western communities.  Damaging straight line winds are the biggest concern.

Showers and thunderstorms continue Friday, but the bigger weather story will become our temperatures as a MUCH colder air mass rushes into the area Friday evening on a gusty northwest wind.  Falling temperatures can be expected through the afternoon Friday so you’ll want to be sure to pack the jacket and cold weather gear tomorrow.

Chilly Weekend…Well below normal temperatures can be expected this weekend along with unsettled conditions.  Saturday continues to look like a mostly cloudy and blustery day with periods of drizzle and/ or sprinkles.  Sunday will feature more in the way of sunshine, but caution we may also deal with widely scattered light showers.

Timing Issues…We’ll fine tune early next week once our first storm system moves through the region. As of now, we target Tuesday as the best day of showers, but timing issues abound.  More on this later.

Not Much Hot Air In Sight…

The search for that first 90 degree day will have to go on (and on and on and on…) as the pattern remains one that will continue to make it very difficult for any sort of long-lasting, sustained, heat.  In fact, we’re actually going to trend temperatures even cooler as we move into Week 2- the exact opposite of what you’d come to expect as we rumble into mid to late July.

Before we get into next week, let’s focus on the shorter term.  Drier air is on our doorstep as a cold front sweeps central Indiana this evening. This will set the stage for a very pleasant mid week stretch, including temperatures that remain below average and dew points that fall into the 50s.  Note the latest dew point plot below, indicating dew points falling into the 50s, and remaining there for the better part of the next (3) days:

plotter

We will turn much more humid (oppressively so) over the weekend and this will help aid in thunderstorm development over the weekend.  Most of the region can expect around an inch of rain, on average, between Friday night and Tuesday, mostly thanks to complexes of thunderstorms.  However, there will be locally heavier totals exceeding 2″ in spots.

cmc_total_precip_east_32

A MUCH stronger front will sweep the state Tuesday and result in temperatures and weather conditions that are much more fall-like than summer.  A couple days next week have the potential to remain in the 60s for highs (centering on Tuesday-Wednesday for that as of now) and overnight lows could dip into the middle 40s to near 50.  Breezy north and northwest winds can also be anticipated. – Certainly far from what you’d expect for this time of year!

Here’s what the upper air pattern will look like next week:

Focusing On Wednesday Evening Severe Potential…

Good afternoon!  We wanted to cut a video discussing our thinking around timing and primary threats from any severe weather that gets going across central Indiana tomorrow evening.

4km NAM forecast radar suggests a stormy time of things Wednesday evening. We discuss in your afternoon video update!

An area of showers and thunderstorms will push through central Indiana in a much weaker state when compared to what this complex was like to our northwest 12 hours ago.  All the while, heavy rain, small hail, and gusty winds can be expected as the storms rumble through central Indiana.  We’ll go through a break in the action during the late morning hours, but caution that a second area of showers and thunderstorms will develop during the early afternoon. These storms will likely reach severe levels as they encounter a warmer, more unstable air mass across southern portions of the state. If you have travel plans say to areas such as Louisville this afternoon, certainly keep an eye to the sky and have a means of receiving the most updated weather information.  All modes of severe weather will be in play across southern Indiana this afternoon, including hail, tornadoes, and straight line wind.

We’ll undergo a regime change tonight and that will set the stage for a delightful close to the work week, including lots of sunshine, low humidity and cooler temperatures.   Our next storm system is slated for a Sunday arrival.

Tuesday Night Update; Southern Indiana Under Gun For A Big Severe Weather Day Wednesday.

It’s been a bit of a frustrating afternoon as I’ve been trying to upload a video discussing our thoughts around tomorrow for a couple of hours….only to no avail.

So this post will have to do.  Really our thoughts remain unchanged concerning the way things unfold late tonight and Wednesday.  The severe thunderstorms to our northwest continue to rumble as of the 10 o’clock hour.

ncrad23

The Storm Prediction Center holds firm to the Slight Risk for the Ohio Valley and northern Tennessee Valley Wednesday.

day2otlk_1730

We wouldn’t be surprised to see a portion (most likely the southern half) of the Slight Risk area upgraded to a rare Moderate Risk area with the update from the SPC early Wednesday morning.

Our thinking hasn’t changed in that we believe the current complex of severe storms arrives into north central Indiana in a weakened state early Wednesday morning.  The rush hour will likely include heavy rain and plenty of thunder, though we think the majority, if not all, of this activity Wednesday morning will remain below severe levels across our immediate region.  Showers and thunderstorms will rumble into the area, especially north of the city during the predawn hours and include plenty of heavy rain.

hires_ref_indy_11

A second round of showers and thunderstorms will fire during the afternoon Wednesday and is likely to turn severe across south central Indiana and points south Wednesday afternoon.  Dangerous conditions are a good bet, including large and destructive hail, damaging straight line winds, and tornadoes.  Certainly if you have plans from Indianapolis to Louisville or Cincy tomorrow afternoon and evening please keep tuned to the latest weather conditions and radar updates.  Further north, the severe potential is much less certain.  We continue to think areas north of the I-70 corridor will struggle to shake the stability provided from the early morning rain and storms.  We caution though that this remains a now-cast scenario and will require a close eye tomorrow afternoon.

Looking farther ahead, we’ll enjoy a refreshing blast of air Thursday-Saturday with bright sunshine, low humidity, and cooler temperatures.  Warmth and humidity will return Sunday with rainfall potential around 1″ additional precipitation.  This will be followed by yet another big push of cooler, drier air early next week.  More on this in the days to come.
