Enjoy Today; More Rain Ahead!

We’ll wrap up the weekend with sunshine, though clouds will be on the increase later this afternoon.  This is all part of the next storm system that will deliver moderate rainfall amounts here to open up the new work week.  Additionally, winds will be strong and gusty Monday along with cooler temperatures.  All-in-all, it’ll be a raw, nasty Monday.

Clouds are already increasing across southern portions of the state this morningir0.

Rain and embedded thunder is blossoming over the Ark-la-tex region and southeast.

As we go through time, a sunny start here will cloud up by the afternoon and evening.  All the same, it’ll be a very nice day with highs reaching the upper 50s.

Low pressure that’s currently organizing along the Texas Gulf Coast region will lift northeast and strengthen.  This will produce our rainy and windy Monday into Tuesday.

Rainfall totals will average around an inch for central portions of the state Monday and model data ranges from 0.50-1.78″.

The high resolution NAM model suggests 0.80-1.00″.

After a wet open to the work week, high pressure will build in and supply a pleasant rest of the week, including the opportunity we may hit our first 70 degree day of the year Thursday.

Pleasant Weekend On Tap. . .The weekend will provide a well-deserved period to dry out as high pressure builds into the region and supplies increasing sunshine.  After a mostly cloudy start to your Saturday, sunshine will begin to increase later this afternoon.  Sunday will feature mostly sunny skies through the day before clouds increase by evening ahead of our next weather maker Monday.

Heavy Rain Maker. . .We certainly don’t need more rain this soon, but we’ll unfortunately deal with just that Monday, along with a strong easterly wind.  Surface low pressure will lift out of the Gulf Coast region into the Ohio Valley and result in periods of rain through the day Monday before diminishing Tuesday.  Early thinking suggests around 1″ of rain here with this storm system.  Additionally, strong easterly winds will gust over 30 MPH Monday along with chilly, raw conditions.

Milder, Southwesterly Flow. . .Most of Wednesday and Thursday will be dry and warmer with a breezy southwesterly wind.  A weak cold front will slip through here late Thursday with a shower possible.  This particular front will then likely stall out just south of our region before lifting back north as a warm front next weekend.

An early call for next weekend places a rather unsettled pattern over our region, including more of those April showers…

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 1″ – 1.5″
  • 7-Day Snowfall Forecast: 0.00″

Update On The Heavy Rain And Severe Potential

It’s a wet and stormy morning across central Indiana, including heavy rain and embedded stronger storms.  The latest HRRR short-term data paints a continued stormy picture through the morning.

That said, we’ll get into some dry time late morning into the afternoon, but the atmosphere will be priming itself for another noisy night ahead.  The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) outlines the region under a slight risk of severe weather, including damaging wind, damaging hail, and a potential tornado.  The greatest risk of severe is to our south, but we must remain on our toes tonight into the wee morning hours Friday.  Please keep your weather radios on alert mode tonight.

The simulated radar shows thunderstorms re-firing to our west late tonight, moving in during the overnight hours.

When all is said and done (and accounting Wednesday’s rain) we still forecast widespread 2-3″ of rain across the region, with locally heavier totals.  Additionally, we bracket late tonight into the early Friday morning hours for the greatest chance of severe weather across our region.  Hail and straight line wind damage are of the greatest concerns, but a tornado can’t be ruled out.  The cold front will sweep the state clean Friday afternoon and help set up a very nice, although cooler, weekend.
