1st Accumulating Snow Event Of The Season (For Most) Arrives Monday…

The first accumulating snow event of the young 2018-2019 season is upon us.  Thankfully, this won’t be any sort of “blockbuster” storm, but instead serve to gently “ease us” into the new snow season.

Upper level energy will eject out of the Plains today and push towards the Ohio Valley Monday.  At the same time, surface low pressure will develop along the Gulf Coast before scooting off to the eastern seaboard and tracking north Monday night and Tuesday.  Initially, it’ll take some time to moisten up what will be a relatively dry air mass, but a mix of cold rain and wet snow should begin making it to the surface during the late morning and early afternoon.

Precipitation will become more widespread as we push into the late afternoon and early evening hours with the predominant precipitation type by this time falling in the form of snow across central Indiana- including Indianapolis.

Widespread light snow will be falling tomorrow night across the region.

Snow will begin to diminish after midnight and by the time all is said and done, we forecast a general 1″ to 2″ across most of central Indiana.  (Some localized lake effect snow showers may add to additional accumulation across north-central portions the central IN Tuesday morning into the afternoon).

We’re left with unseasonably cold conditions through the remainder of the week, followed by reinforcing cold air arriving next weekend…

Strong Storm Potential & Old Man Winter Comes Knocking Next Week…

The upcoming work week will feature a busy time of things as the fight between fall and winter begin.  Initially, it’ll be the warmer side of things that will promote the potential of strong and gusty storms Monday night into Tuesday, but by mid and late week, drastically colder conditions will lead to the chance of scattered snow showers…

A couple of showers and gusty southerly winds will help close out the weekend, but it’s the storm system that moves in Monday night and Tuesday that has more of our attention.  Surface low pressure will move off the lee of the Rockies and on into MO and IL Tuesday- strengthening along the way and eventually tracking through the Great Lakes Tuesday evening.  Not only will this deliver another round of hefty rains across central parts of the state, but we may have to deal with a couple of strong to severe storms (wind being the biggest concern).

Additional rainfall totals of 1″ to 2″ with locally heavier amounts are a good bet in that Monday night – Tuesday time frame.

While we’ll certainly turn colder behind this storm system, the true early season push of arctic air will wait a couple of days to arrive- Thursday afternoon into Friday.  Not only will this be the coldest air of the season (lower-middle 20s Friday morning and likely colder next Saturday), but the first flakes of the season are also likely to fly across central Indiana to wrap up the work week.  Furthermore, Snow Belt communities can expect the first “shoveable” snow of the season.  Giddy up!

Don’t look now, but more “fun and games” await the following week…

Looking At The Week Ahead: Significant Changes To A MUCH Cooler Pattern Loom…

We’re opening the new week with the same old unseasonably warm and muggy weather pattern that was with us the majority of last week, but significant changes loom during the week ahead.  Ultimately, summer will be laid to rest (finally) and a legitimate, “stick and hold” fall pattern will take hold.  The transition will feature a “game changer” of a midweek cold front that will take us from an August to a November feel in as little as 24 hours.  Here are some highlights between now and then:

I. A strong ridge will continue to promote an unseasonably warm and muggy feel by early-October standards. Scattered “splash and dash” storms are possible through the early portion of the week, but organized significant rain isn’t anticipated.

II. TD 14 will strengthen into Tropical Storm Michael later today and eventually a hurricane before making landfall along the Florida panhandle during the middle of the week.  The remnant moisture of Michael will then race northeast and impact the flood-ravaged Carolinas during the latter stages of the work week.

III. As Michael’s remnant moisture tracks northeast into the Carolinas, a strong cold front will sweep through the Mid West and Ohio Valley.  Better chances of organized showers and thunderstorms will arrive ahead of the front Wednesday.  Once the front passes, a dramatic wind shift to the northwest will push a MUCH cooler and drier air mass into the region.

IV. We note the PNA (Pacific North America pattern) is flipping to a positive state and that will drive a more sustained period of colder air during the medium and longer range period- or mid and late October.

The air will grow cold enough to support the potential of frost during the 5-10 day period on at least a couple of nights.  Additionally, reinforcing chilly air may ignite the lake effect to our north and northeast during Week 2…  “Times, they are a changing!”

Sunshine Returns; Coldest Air Of The Season Awaits…

Highlights:

  • Sunshine returns
  • Coldest air of the season blows into town
  • Wet and cold close to the weekend

Coldest Air Of The Fall On Deck…High pressure is building in and will dominate our midweek weather, including sunshine and unseasonably cool temperatures.  We’ll add a gusty breeze into the mix Thursday afternoon as an early season arctic front approaches.  Once that front passes by Thursday night, a much colder air mass will plunge into the region.  If your travels take you north Friday, snowbelt regions can expect snow showers and embedded squalls as the early season arctic air helps ignite the lake effect machine.  Our first average high of 37° is on December 20th, so we’ll be running well ahead of schedule Friday.  Bundle up!

After a bright and sunny start Saturday, clouds will begin to increase during the afternoon and thicken up overnight as our next storm system approaches.  That storm system will deliver light rain Sunday.  Sunshine returns to kick off the new work week along with slightly below normal temperatures.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • Snowfall: 0.00″
  • Rainfall: 0.25″ – 0.50″

Lake-Driven APRIL Snow Showers…

Hard to believe we were in the 70s just passed the midnight hour Monday morning.  Feels like temperatures are now in the teens with snow showers and embedded heavier squalls across central Indiana- some of which have resulted in periodic slick travel conditions.

Note the lake Michigan connection to the snow “streamers” with that famous northwest to southeast orientation in this morning’s visible satellite image.

Highs today will struggle to reach 40 in many locations with wind chills in the teens and 20s.  A hard freeze is on tap tonight as all go into the middle to upper 20s.

Slow moderation will begin Wednesday…
