Chilly Air Reinforces Itself…

Highlights:

  • Afternoon showers
  • Patchy frost Thursday morning
  • Chilly air reinforcements

Flannel Weather…Late October averages across central Indiana include highs in the lower 60s and lows in the lower 40s.  The balance of this forecast update will include temperatures well below those seasonal norms.  Have the coats, jackets, and flannel 🙂 at the ready!

While early parts of our Wednesday could feature a couple looks at the sun, mostly cloudy conditions will dominate our hump day along with scattered afternoon showers.  Thursday will be a ‘tweener- morning frost will give way to more in the way of sunshine, with an increasingly gusty southwest breeze by the afternoon!

Our next cold front will approach to close the work week.  Showers will spread into the state after a dry start to the day and a cold northwest wind will hit like a wall Friday evening.  Look for a sharply colder close to the day.

A deep trough of low pressure will dominate our weekend, supplying the coldest air so far this season, along with considerable cloudiness. Spokes of upper level energy will rotate overhead and help generate a light shower or two, especially Sunday.  Yes, temperatures will be cold enough to allow for a little snow to mix in as well.

Looking ahead to Halloween- reinforcing chilly air should be spilling south behind a Monday frontal passage and this will set the tone for chilly conditions as the trick-or-treaters take to the streets.  Plan to bundle up!

Sunny Days; Pattern Change On The Horizon…

Highlights:

  • Extended stretch of dry, sunny weather
  • Late weekend cold front
  • Much colder close to the month looms

Ideal, Crisp Fall Day…Sheltered, lower lying communities are waking up to temperatures in the middle and upper 30s this morning with patchy frost.  The rest of us are in the lower to middle 40s with just enough breeze preventing a deeper overnight fall.  All of us we’ll moderate into the mid and upper 60s this afternoon under a clear sky.  Those mostly sunny conditions will continue into mid and late week with moderating temperatures.

Our next storm system will arrive during the second half of the weekend in the form of a cold front.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms will move in Sunday afternoon and evening ahead of the front.  Cooler air will invade behind the frontal passage, but the true chilly stuff will press in early next week.  Speaking of chilly weather, medium and longer range data continues to paint a cold close to the month and open to November.  Warm costumes will be needed for trick-or-treating this year.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • Snowfall: 0.00″
  • Rainfall: 0.25″ – 0.50″

Falling Temperatures Today; Dry Weather Returns…

Highlights:

  • Temperatures fall through the day
  • Sunshine returns this week
  • Pleasant stretch of weather ahead

Jackets And Sweaters Required By This Afternoon…A cold front will continue to march east this morning and this will push a broken band of showers east through the state.  Rainfall amounts won’t be significant, but will be enough to be a nuisance on the way to church or brunch this morning.  This afternoon, we’ll notice an increasingly gusty breeze and falling temperatures.  While it’s mild this morning, it’ll feel much cooler as we progress through the afternoon and evening hours.  Jackets and sweaters will be required!

High pressure will settle overhead for the upcoming week and this will lead to an extended period of dry, pleasant weather.  Temperatures will moderate from seasonably cool early-week to unseasonably mild by late-week.  As expected, the late September and early October warmth (particularly warm overnight lows) really stunted our fall foliage this year.  That said, the cool, calm nights ahead this week will be sufficient enough to at least ignite some of the remaining leaves on trees for what should be a couple weeks of “decent” color ahead.

Longer term, there are big goings on behind the scenes that will help drive a dramatically different weather pattern to wrap up the month of October and head into November.  Heads up to the parents out there, you may want to nudge the kiddos into picking a warm costume this Halloween…

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • Snowfall: 0.00″
  • Rainfall: 0.10″ – 0.25″

Colder Pattern Ahead To Close October; Open November?

October, month-to-date, has been nothing short of a blow torch.  Officially, IND is running +9° through the 11th.

In coffee shops and my travels around the great state of Indiana, I’ve overheard lots of talk centered on because October has been so warm, another lackluster snow season awaits.  Let us remind you that the infamous snow season of ’13-’14 featured a very warm first half of October.

The upcoming 7-10 days will feature more of a transitional period of weather that we’ve come to know and love around these parts.  Warmth will spread northeast this weekend ahead of an approaching cold front (around 80° Saturday) before falling temperatures Sunday afternoon behind the frontal passage.  The chilliest air so far this season will descend upon the region early next week. That said, the chill won’t hold and another surge of above normal warmth will spread northeast by the latter parts of next week.

A more significant pattern change appears dialed up prior to Halloween and this is one that seems suited to lead to more prolonged and significant cold to wrap up the month and head on into November.  Notice the evolution of things from October 21st to the 25th, courtesy of the GEFS off the fantastic tropicaltidbits.com.  Other model data is in general agreement, leading to a rather high confidence level for this time period.

It should also be noted that analog data and research also would lean heavily in the cold direction to wrap up October and these findings also favor a chilly November… More on that later!  Speaking of later, an updated 7-day will be posted this evening.  Make it a great day!

Weather Certainly More Of A Treat Than A Trick…

screen-shot-2016-10-31-at-7-26-50-amThe 2016-2017 IndyWx.com Winter Outlook is now available.

Highlights:

  • Great trick-or-treat weather in store this evening
  • Near record warmth Tuesday-Wednesday
  • Cooler to close the week

Pleasant Halloween Weather…Recent Halloweens have produced accumulating snow, heavy rain, and storms.  Thankfully, today will be much more pleasant and feature mostly cloudy skies and pleasant temperatures.

Speaking of temperatures, they’ll get a big boost Tuesday and Wednesday (both days will feature near record highs).  A breezy SW wind will be in play and clouds will increase Wednesday, eventually giving way to showers Wednesday night.  Rain will continue Thursday morning as a cold front moves through the region.  Cooler, drier air will move in as we close the work week.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday will be dry and pleasant.  Sunday is a bit of a question mark.  The European model is suggesting a reinforcing push of cooler air will ooze into the area, while the GFS is less impressed.  We’ll lean our forecast more towards the European for now.  Regardless, Sunday will be a dry day.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • Snowfall: 0.00″
  • Rainfall: 0.50″

Warmth Dominates…

screen-shot-2016-10-29-at-7-41-51-amHighlights:

  • Near record warmth
  • Windy conditions
  • Scattered showers to wrap up the weekend
  • “Ups and downs” next week

Hard To Believe This Is Late October…A strong southwest flow will help provide a windy, but incredibly warm Saturday.  Highs will approach record territory around 80.  (We’ll have to keep an eye on that 81 degree record set in 1922).  Southwest winds gusting around 30 MPH will be a good bet this afternoon, especially in the open country.

A weak disturbance will push southeast Sunday and help to increase our cloud cover, along with providing scattered showers- mainly in the afternoon and evening.  We’ll turn cooler, but still remain above normal for Halloween.  Trick-or-treat conditions look ideal, especially considering recent Halloweens have served up rain, storms, and snow across the region.

A warm front will lift north Monday night and offer up another opportunity to push for record warmth Tuesday and Wednesday before a cold front slides through Thursday with showers.  Cooler air will settle into the Ohio Valley and Mid West to wrap up the work week.

Upcoming 7-Day Precipitation Forecast:

  • Snowfall: 0.00″
  • Rainfall: 0.10″ – 0.25″

Warm Close To October And Open To November…

screen-shot-2016-10-27-at-7-56-39-amHighlights:

  • Cooler and blustery today
  • Warmer times coming to close the month and open November
  • Scattered showers return next week

Chilly Today, But Warmer Times Loom…A cold front swept through central IN earlier this morning.  Since we’re on the NW side of the front now, a cooler air mass is filtering in as we type this.  Today will be blustery and chilly with considerable cloudiness.  That said, the chilly air will only hang around for 24 hours, as we begin to moderate Friday afternoon.  SW winds will blow Friday PM and help give a chilly start to the day a rather significant boost into the upper 60s for a high.  Saturday will out-do that as we zoom into the middle 70s.

A weak front will slip through here Sunday and cool us off a few degrees.  While a light shower is possible as the front moves through, we think most stay dry.

We quickly return to the warm regime early next week.  At this time, Halloween looks mild and dry for those trick-or-treaters out there.

Looking further down the road, significant changes loom by mid and late November.  Those changes include the following words: cold and wintry…

  • Snowfall: 0.00″

Unseasonably Warm Open To November…

Screen Shot 2015-10-31 at 8.56.22 AMHighlights:

  • Windy and showery Halloween
  • Dry time returns with warmth
  • Watching a more substantial storm at the end of the week

Good morning and happy Halloween, friends!  We’re off to a cold and blustery start.  Temperatures in the 40s, along with a stiff east breeze is presenting a chill in the air!  A rather gloomy day is on deck with “showery” conditions at times, but there will be more dry time than not.

The second half of the weekend will turn brighter and very pleasant, and this will really set the tone for what will be a very tranquil first few days of November (where is time going)?!  Unseasonably warm conditions will be with us for the balance of the upcoming work week and provide a great opportunity to get those yard chores taken care of or Christmas lights put up.

A more substantial storm system will arrive late week with showers and thunderstorms followed by colder air next weekend…

Upcoming 7-Day Rainfall Forecast: 0.50″ – 1″
